that the president wants to move fast on the issue of gun control coming out of the sandy hook shooting. vice president biden's task force is likely to make recommendations before the inaugural and he told boston's mayor tom menino that it would be passed by the end of january. is that optimism on his part justified, and are you open to the kind of reforms the president has already talked about like a limit on high-capacity gun magazines and background checks to buyers at gun shows? >> well, first we need to concentrate on joe biden's group and what are they going to recommend? and after they do that, we'll decide what, if anything, is appropriate to do in this area, but the biggest problem we have at the moment is spending and debt. that's going to dominate the congress between now and the end of march. none of these issues, i think, will have the kind of priority that spending and debt are going to have over the next two or three months. >> so you're not going to address this until after you address these three deadlines we talked about at the top of the program? >> yeah, the single biggest

frustrating, i got angry. i was so very passionate, following what happened at sandy hook, as we all were. and my position on what should be done about gun control, i've been advocating for a long time. so this to me was a tipping point. and to hear them continue to espouse this, you cannot touch any guns philosophy, i found very frustrating. with alex jones, i took a different tact. my tact was to try and show that i could be a listener, that i would give him the time to explain, articulate his position, but instead, he didn't want to debate anything or discuss it. but i found it illuminating that during his rant, you got a real sense of what an element of the more extreme gun activists in this country genuinely believe. they believe that their government will perform as a sort of tyranny and overthrow them or try to, and that is why they all need to be heavily armed. and that's what he believes. that's what his followers, to his pretty well-listened to show believe. and i think sometimes, you have to give people just enough rope to tie themselves into a large, pretty unedifying not. and

'm assuming that you've been doubly impacted because you grew up just five minutes, ten minutes from sandy hook elementary school. so you know that area very well. you know the school. >> yeah. i know people who worked in that school. and who passed away. and so this -- i mean, this issue is obviously of great importance to me personally. i think it affects us all equally. whether we're personally shot or we know people who have been shot and effected by gun violence. if one person dies, we all have a problem. >> julian, mass murders tend to grab the headlines as you know. but we've been tracking the daily gun violence in this country. and just in the last 24 hours two women killed in front of a senior home in tamarac, florida. in chicago one man killed another seriously wounded outside a store. in dallas a marriage with a history of violence came to an end when a man shot and killed his wife we've seen increased public pressure in recent weeks, but can we hope to see that extend to real action? >> i think we can. and that is the $64,000 question here. as you have pointed out, not just the

which was allowed to go away, you couldn't have had the clips that that young man took into the sandy hook school. it would not have been possible. that's a common-sense example. close all loopholes. every gun purchase has to have the same rigor attached to it regardless of where it occurs in our country. those are two things that would make a gigantic difference in the amount of violence that's taking place in our urban environments and yes, under these circumstances where somebody goes in and shoots up a movie theater or shoots up a school. let's take the steps that make the most sense today. i had a great conversation yesterday with vice president biden. and i know he is preparing his recommendations to the president. and i don't want to get into the details of the discussion, but he's got this down pretty well. he understands what we need to do to make it less likely that these things are going to happen in our cities and towns and these mass murders could be limited at least going into the future if some common-sense things are taken. the magazine thing is very big. >> wes. >> an

says its membership increased by more than 100,000 since the sandy hook shooting. attorney general holder is meeting with dick's sporting goods and walmart. white house is calling in heavy hitters to change public opinion including bill clinton who denounced the use of assault weapons and the administration has the strongest ally in gabby giffords, herself a victim of gun violence but the president has work cut out for him. nearly half of all americans oppose a ban or semiautomatic weapons including those in the federal assault weapons ban that expired near lay decade ago. so let's spin on all of this. i guess what this is building towards at least politically is the white house and allies want to try to isolate the nra, even on the right and within the republican party and so you have a meeting today with walmart, dick's sporting goods. they want to take, you know, groups like that, businesses like that, interests like that and sort of pit everyone, this sort of wide array against the nra and dare house republicans to side with this unpopular group. i'm a little skeptical that any
